Why are the Mariners doing so bad?

A few seasons ago i remember they were holding their own and if i remember correctly, won the division and made it to the post season(2007, 2008). Right now and last year they have been a completely different team. Didnt follow baseball for 3 years. Why are they so horrible? PS. Ichiro is sick, how can they go wrong with him on?
