What's the process of a Canadian becoming American?

I'm pretty sure I found the love of my life, and he lives in America, and I'm Canadian. How long would the process of becoming an American take? like to live there as a Canadian. Would I have to keep on coming back home every 6 months? What must you do in order to become one?
